Welcome to the Friday Five link up!  Link up your Friday Five post with us below- any list of 5 is welcome!  From a list of 5 tips to just 5 random thoughts, your Friday 5 post can be about anything!  This week our guest Friday Five post comes to us from Jill, who writes the blog And Life Goes On...An Angel and a Rainbow.

5 facts about rare diseases:

There are many different days in the year for different causes. February 28 is Rare Disease Day.

World Rare Disease Day is an annual observance held on the last day of February (February 28th or February 29th in a Leap Year) to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatments and medical representation for individuals with rare and genetic diseases and their families. (source)

Here are 5 facts about rare diseases:

1. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans at any given time.

2. According to the National Institutes of Health, there are between 6,000 and 7,000 rare diseases affecting from 25 to 30 million Americans.

3. 80% of rare diseases have identified genetic origins  and 50% of rare diseases touch children. (source)

4. Patients with rare diseases are frequently misdiagnosed or are undiagnosed. (source)

5. Approximately 50% of rare diseases do not have a disease specific foundation supporting or researching their rare disease (source)

If  you see people walking around sporting a denim ribbon, ask them which rare disease they are supporting.

Please take a minute to click on the source links are read a bit more about rare diseases and how you can help spread awareness.   To learn more about Niemann Pick Disease, the disease I support, go to the National Niemann Pick Disease Foundation, the Mayo Clinic, and the Parseghian Foundation.

State Love from our State Reps!
and one last giveaway!

To help celebrate our one year anniversary, some of our State Reps are sharing what they love about their state!

Meg from Maryland:

I have never seen a state with pride quite like Maryland pride. Walk through the Inner Harbor any given day in the summer- you’ll see Orioles t-shirts, Maryland flag board shorts, and Natty Boh tattoos on calves and biceps galore. Touristy spots aren’t the only place you’ll see the easy to spot Maryland pattern- drive through the streets of Federal Hill and you’ll see almost every house on a single city block is waving the MD flag. The pride amongst residents is easy to understand when you know about the many wonderful things associated with the state like Berger Cookies, Old Bay, Baltimore Ravens, Crabcakes, Utz, Edgar Allen Poe, and The National Anthem. Maryland is also the home of one of the largest US aquariums, The Naval Academy and one of the top 25 Medical Universities in the world, Johns Hopkins. The next time you are looking for a weekend getaway think of us over here in Maryland- we’ll share our Natty Boh but only if you can guess the riddle under the cap.

Kate from Massachusetts:

Massachusetts, a state that has a lot to brag about although we'll leave the recent frigid weather off the list. We have amazing sports teams and fans who love them through the good and the bad. We have fantastic schools, great beaches for the summer, so-so mountains for winter skiing and even a rock that boasts hosting the first settlers. History is abundant but so is the future. You can visit final resting spots of our country's founders in the same city where groundbreaking research is being done. How many states have all that?

Kallie & Meg from Connecticut:

Hey! We're Meg and Kallie, State Representatives for Connecticut. Kallie has lived in Connecticut for 18 years and Meg has been here since she graduated from college 3 years ago.  We love Connecticut for a lot of reasons.  As you can see from our photo, we love Connecticut because we love our UCONN Huskies! We love to tailgate for football games and visit Gampel for basketball.  We love that our state has oceans, lakes, rivers, mountains, forests and farmland.  We also love being a quick trip to some of our other favorite Northeast cities: New York City and Boston!

Jessica from Rhode Island:

Rhode Island is awesome because we have a little bit of everything. You can get from one end of the state to the other in under an hour. In one day you can go from the beautiful coast in Narragansett to the dense woods of Glocester. We have a little bit of a city like feel in Providence and surrounding areas to the rural feel of the rest of the state. Being one of the original colonies, Rhode Island offers historic architecture and a dense history. It a beautiful little state with a lot to offer.  The summer is the best, but you cannot deny how beautiful it can be right after a snow storm that leaves it looking like a winter wonderland. So you can agree, Rhode Island is *wicked* awesome right?

Thanks to all our State Reps for showing off how awesome their states are!  Stay tuned because we have a few more "State Love" posts coming up in the next few weeks!

"How has it been a year already?! I was so excited when Rachel first told me about her plans to start "NorthEast Bloggers" and was honored to be its first member! I've loved how we've grown and it's been so much fun getting to know everyone!"

Blog of the Week: Another Clean Slate

This week our blog of the week is Another Clean Slate written by Kate!  Meet Kate:

My name is Kate, and I am a not-so-young-anymore professional living in the Boston area, who spends my days in a cubicle.  I work in Marketing & Sales and while I ask a lot of questions, my Journalism degree isn’t put to too much use.

I’ve moved back and forth from Massachusetts to Florida more than once after graduating from the University of Florida- Go Gators!

My friends are everywhere and while I miss them, I love having people to visit.

You can usually find me drinking wine with friends, reading at the beach, cooking dinner with my boyfriend or watching mindless TV shows on my DVR.

I’m a firm believer that everything is better when the sun is shining.

If there is anything else you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I figure since I started this blogging adventure, my life is an open book- or at least an open Web page.

Thanks Kate!  Be sure to check out her blog, Another Clean Slate, this week and say hi!

Welcome to Our One Year Anniversary Week!

Welcome everyone to our big one year anniversary celebration week!  This week we are going all out with tons of give aways, special post and an "anything goes" social media link up party!  I am also sharing my thoughts in a blogging first- my first ever vlog!  I hope you'll watch below and then scroll down after the video for a super awesome giveaway from our State Reps!

Northeast Bloggers was started in February of 2013 after a short brainstorming session driving home from brunch with my husband!  I was explaining to him what blogging networks are and how there are so many networks for Southern Bloggers, Texas bloggers, Florida bloggers, etc, but none that I knew of for North-easterners!  And he simply said "why don't you start one yourself?"  And so the Northeast Bloggers Network was born!  After we got home I immediately went to work on the blog layout, our first header, buttons and brainstorming ideas of how it might all work.

I am happy to say that after a year we are 500+ members strong, with an very active Facebook community,  and tons of great networking opportunities for everyone each week!  If you don't read our monthly newsletter (check your "promotions" tab!) I highly recommend you do, because that's where we promote all the fun things going on that month!

A big thank you to everyone for being an awesome member of our network!  I hope you are finding it useful and having fun meeting other bloggers in your region!

And now on to the vlog....

Thanks for watching!

Our first giveaway this week is a super awesome CASH give away sponsored by our amazing state reps!  Please give them a big thank you for all their behind the scenes hard work!  By entering the giveaway you are thanking our State Reps by following them on their various blogs and social media outlets!  Plus, of course, you could win money or a giftcard, winners choice!  So it's a win-win (win) situation!

Blog of the Week: Debra's Random Rambles

Welcome!  This week our blog of the week is Debra of Debra's Random Rambles!  Meet Debra:

My story is pretty simple. I'm a stay at home mom of 7. I am a retired Paramedic and I wouldn't have it any other way. My children and their ages are:

Adam 21 (moved out)
Zachary 15
Emily 14
Jordan 12
Abigail 8
Ethen 5
Deven 5

Yep, my youngest 2 are twins. Identical boys. I have been with my wonderful husband, Scott, for 17 years and we have been married for 12 of them. I'm so blessed that he is such a great dad and husband. He works hard to provide for us.

I know what its like to grow up in hard times. My mom was a retired teacher by the time I was adopted and my dad was a Firefighter. We lived tight but we lived and I learned alot about the hard things. I can garden and do all the house stuff but I can also run a wood splitter, build things and change oil and tires

I live in Central Maine and except for the extreme weather changes in a 24 hr. period, its a great place to raise kids. We have 2 cats, and we used to have a dog until we realized that the twins were not friendly and nice to dogs. So we allowed him to adopt another family, after our careful screening.

Thanks for sharing with us Debra!  Be sure to check out her blog Debra's Random Rambles this week and say hi!

Friday Five Link Up
and 5 Facts About Congenital Heart Disease

Welcome to the Friday Five link up!  Please join us by linking up your Friday post of five!  You can do a list of 5 things, 5 pictures, 5 random thoughts- whatever!  Link up after the guest post below!

This weeks Friday Five guest post comes to us from Marla of the blog Luck Fupus!  Marla is sharing 5 facts about heart disease with us today, because it's Congenital Heart Disease Awareness day.

Well hello there, and Happy Valentine's Day! I'm MJ, the NJ state rep and I blog over at a little space on the interwebs that I like to call Luck Fupus.

Take a second and think about it.

Anyway, I'm here to bring you some knowledge about congenital heart defects, Friday Five style. Why, when I have lupus, would I be writing about congenital heart defects? Well my friends, I am a genetic wonder (read: mess), and I was also born with a congenital heart defect called tetralogy of Fallot, which took 4 heart surgeries to correct by the time I was 6.

I'm like Viki from Small Wonder. I'm fantastic. Except I'm not made of plastic, nor do I have microchips here and there. But, I do have surgical wire holding my ribcage together.

Ahem.

Why on Valentine's Day am I here to tell you about congenital heart defects? Because it's Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day!!!!! I'm not here to scare you, I'm here to raise awareness! There are a lot of mommies in this network. Knowledge is power, right?

So, without further adieu...

Five Facts About Congenital Heart Disease
All of my facts came from here, a very reputable source!

1.
Congenital heart defects occur in the early stages of pregnancy when the heart is forming. They include abnormalities in the heart's structure, electrical system, and other abnormalities that affect the function of a baby's heart.

depending on where you read, that number ranges from 1-100 to 1-120.

2.
Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect, and is the leading cause of infant death. In the US, twice as many children die from congenital heart defects each year than from all forms of childhood cancer combined. Yet, funding for pediatric cancer research is five times higher than funding for CHD.

3.
It is estimated that at least 400 infants with an unrecognized CHD are discharged each year from newborn nurseries in the United States. Pulse oximetry is a simple, inexpensive, non-invasive test done at the bedside to determine the percentage of oxygen in the blood. Low levels in the blood can indicate a critical CHD. Many states have mandated pulse oximetry be performed on every newborn prior to discharge home, but it is still not mandated in all 50 states!

4.
There are more than 40 different types of congenital heart defects. Little is known about the cause of most of them. There is no known prevention or cure for any of them.

5.
For the first time, due to medical and surgical advancements, 50% of CHD survivors (me!) are adults.

I know it seems like pretty heavy stuff for this forum, but, so many of you are mommies (or mommies-to-be), and this is important information. Although CHD can't be prevented, early detection is key...

Happy HAPPY Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day and a Happy Valentine's Day to you all! Thank you Rachel for allowing me to share some knowledge! I would love it if you all came on over to Luck Fupus and said hello! You can find me on BlogLovinTwitter, and Facebook

Thanks so much for sharing with us Marla!

Blog of the Week: P is for Preschooler

Come meet our new blog of the week- Emma of P is for Preschooler!

Hi! I'm Emma! I'm a stay-at-home mom to an almost-5-year old daughter. I love genealogy, reading (yep, totally nerd!) and trying to learn French (key word there- trying!). We live just outside Boston, Massachusetts.

My newest interest (read: obsession) is blogging.   P is for Preschooler is a blog about toddlers and preschoolers. I started it believing no one would read it and just wanting to keep a record of things my daughter and I did. Now my long-term goal for the blog is to be a resource to parents and caregivers for easy ways to learn and play with their little ones.

Blogging has been an amazing creative outlet for me. I had forgotten how much I liked writing! And I've met so many other great bloggers. Hope you'll stop by and say "hi"!

Thanks Emma!  Be sure to check out her blog P is for Preschooler this week and say hi!

Friday Five Link Up
and 5 Date Worthy Restaurants in Philly

Welcome to the Friday Five link up!  Whats going on in your world this week?  Link up with your post of five!

Today's Friday Five post comes from Rachel of Can't Google Everything

Five Date Worthy Restaurants in Philadelphia

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I thought it would be a great idea to share some of my favorite "date night" restaurants in Philly!

1.  Amada- this is by far one of my favorite restaurants ever!  It's a tapas place and the food is amazing!  I especially love the baked goat cheese and the sangria.  This is a great place to go on a date or for a celebration with a small group of friends.

2. Hawthorne's- located in South Philly (well, just south of South St, so more like Queen Village/Italian Market area) Hawthorns is a nice relaxing place to go on a date.  It's not "fancy fancy,"  but the food is really good and they have a huge beer fridge to choose from, along with growlers you can order for here or to go.  Inside is a comfy vibe, with a fireplace and homey decor.

3. Cochon- another Queen Village favorite of mine is Cochon (French for pig).  Cochon is a great restaurant with a French influence.  They food is seriously good!  It's a small, intimate place, so great for a date, not so much for large groups.  It's BYO (which helps with the bill!) and cash only.

4. Mixto- Mixto is a Cuban restaurant in Center City.  The bread is seriously good and I always get to ropa vieja to eat!  Yum!  They also have great cocktails and serve brunch on the weekends.  However, if you go in the summer I recommend asking for a seat on the first floor because it is seriously hot on the second floor!

5. Beaumonde- last but not least is my favorite Creperie!  I've actually never been here for dinner, just brunch, but they do serve dinner and I'm sure it's fabulous.  We go here sometimes for brunch and get crepes and they are just amazing!  They also have great mimosas and the coffee is really good, which I find to be rare at brunch places!

If you're ever in Philly, be sure to check these places out!

And now on to the link up!  Link up your Friday Five post below and be sure to hop around to check out some of the other posts!
