The Friday Five Hop and 5 Subscription Boxes Worth Considering

Welcome to the Friday Five Hop! We invite you to link up your Friday Five post with us below! Friday Five post can be about anything- as long as it's a list of five! Today's guest Friday Five comes from Bethany who is the voice behind Twenty Something Plus. Today Bethany is sharing 5 subscription boxes she loves with us!

5 Subscription Boxes Worth Considering

I am a huge believer in trying before buying. In my experience you don't like it in the store, you won't like it when you get it home. But how can you know this if you aren't able to try it in the store? Subscription boxes. Think magazines but samples of products you get to try and can later purchase if you like them. I have tried tons of boxes, and have found some that I think are great, and others that aren't for me, but you may love. I want to share my favorites for different types of subscription boxes.

1. Birchbox This was my first ever subscription box, and I absolutely adore it. While there are many other beauty/grooming boxes like Birchbox, the community and fun that comes with it is incomparable. I also really like that there is also a men's version of the box. I gifted it to my partner (aka "the manfriend") for his birthday last year and while it wasn't his cup of tea, he did admit that there were a few cool products that he now uses regularly and would never have hear of had it not been for Birchbox Man.

2. Julep I enjoy doing my own nails, but buying nail polish isn't very fun when you're indecisive. Julep makes it easy, you fill out a quiz and get two colors and a beauty product sent to you each month. What I like most about Julep is that you have the option to skip a month if you want.

3. Scratch This is also a nail box, but instead of nail polish, you get nail wraps. I wish I was creative or talented enough to create little master pieces of nail art when I do my own mani, but I'm not. Nail wraps are an easy way to get funky nails and every box includes a fun surprise!

4. Loot Crate The manfriend asked for this one. It's heaven in a box for geeks, and I would know. This past box was hero themed and included a few Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle goodies, which ended up in my possession. Usually there is a tee with the theme that alone makes up for the monthly cost.

5. Whimsey Box Confession: I don't currently subscribe to this subscription box. However, I love the diy projects that they share on their blog. There is also the opportunity to purchase kits for projects you like instead.

These are just some of the different boxes you can try, but they literally have them for just about anything! Boxes for your pet, for natural food lovers, for fitness buffs, you name it! I often share what I get in my subscriptions on my blog, so if you're curious to see some examples feel free to check out my blog!

Thanks Bethany!  And now it's your turn!  Do you have a Friday Five post to share?  Link up below, and then please be sure to visit others in the hop!

Road Trip Theme Ideas!

Today Kelly of A Lovely Life, Indeed, is sharing some tips with us for some great road trips!  Summer might be almost over but these ideas would be great in the fall as well!

We love road trips. Armed with snacks, coffee or tea and a good play list, we can go for days.

If you're one of those folks, like us, who loves the open road, here are some theme ideas for your summer travels that may take you someplace unexpected.

1. State park tour.
Make a goal to visit your state parks. Start here, at America's State Parks or google your own state's parks. Use apps and gps tours to access the best that your state has to offer.

2. Museum tour
If you're a Bank of America card holder, you can get into more than 150 museums in 92 cities in 31 states for FREE on the 1st weekend of every month through the Museums on Us program. This is a great way to see touring exhibits, as well as permanent collections that your favorite museums have curated.

If you're not a Bank of America card holder, check with your local library for museum passes. This is a lower-cost option and you may discover someplace new. A win-win.

3. Foodie tour...here are some ideas for seeking out samples of the best in your area and crown your own personal champion.

  • lobster rolls
  • barbecue
  • ice cream
4. Get your kicks on route 66
Or any other route that works for you. Pick a starting point of any in-state route and follow it from end to end. Or, if you have more time, pick an interstate. Stay off the beaten path and discover main streets and back roads, country stores and roadside attractions. You can always get on the freeway, but you may discover a way from here to there worth revisiting. And if you have a lot of time, consider US-1, from Maine to Key West, Florida.

5. Flagship pilgrimage
Many beloved companies have flagship stores that are well worth the visit. They may offer tours and outlets where you can find bargains on your favorite products.

Here in New England, we have

And I have always wanted to visit Bronner's Christmas Wonderland in Frankenmuth, Michigan to add to our ornament collection and tradition

What are your favorite road trip themes?

NYC Blogger Meet Up

Hi Everyone!

It's Karen your NY State Rep. I'm so excited to say that a meet up is in the works to take place in NYC! It's been a long time coming and I have high hopes for a great event. First off, I know it's hard to come up with a date that will work for everyone but I went ahead and chose Saturday, October 11th. September is a crazy month with settling into new routines and hopefully October will give everyone enough time to plan ahead. Plus, I think we can all agree, NYC in the fall is beautiful!
Right now our meeting place will be in Central Park. As we get closer, I'll post more info with the exact location in the park (yes I know, it's huge!).

Please submit this form so I can get idea of how many people will be attending.

Thanks everyone and please feel free to email me directly with any questions or ideas: karenssoiree@gmail.com

Blog of the Week: Lady Diana's Pearls

Welcome to our Blog of the Week interview!  This week we are featuring Connecticut blogger Rosa, who writes the blog Lady Diana's Pearls.  Meet Rosa!

Tell us a little about you:
I'm a part time working mom of four. I started working after my youngest was born, so it's been almost three years. Before that I was a full time at home mom. I really miss it but I really do enjoy the connections and social aspect of working outside the home. I work for a medical office and love our patients.

What is your blog about?
My blog if I had to describe it in one word would be about lifestyle. I talk about fashion, beauty & makeup, about food, travel and just fun things. I present my views on the subjects and try to influence others with my ideas. I enjoy cooking so much and I frequently feature recipes. It's a diary of sorts, if you will.

What is your favorite spot to visit in the Northeast?
My favorite spot to visit in the Northeast is Newport, RI. We vacation there every summer, have been for many years. It is a 1.5 hour trip from where I live but once I'm there it feels like I'm in a whole other world. I absolutely love it!

What do you love most about blogging?
I love to express my personal interests. More importantly, I love it when I write articles that others find helpful, useful or for fun. When my audience engages me, I find satisfaction and it tells me I'm on the right track connecting with others.

What is your favorite form of social media?
My favorite social media is probably Instagram. I get instant gratification and access to others whom I either follow or follow me. And I'm able to interact immediately with others.
Where do you live and what do you love about it?
I live in a small town called Bolton. It is outside of Hartford, east of the river. I love that I'm away from all the city buzz but close enough to shop and see exciting things in the city. My town is very small and I really enjoy living in a country setting.

Thanks for sharing Rosa!  Be sure to check out her blog, Lady Diana's Pearls, this week and say hi!

The importance of social media for your blog

This post brought to you by Valerie, NJ State Rep, who blogs at In-Between Life.

Do you use social media for your blog? Does your blog have its own Facebook page? Do you share your posts on Twitter and Pinterest? Have you gotten the hang of utilizing Google+ for your blog? If not—you should! When it comes to bloggers, social media is our best friend. It's the best way to get your blog out there. It's also the best way to network with other bloggers, which essentially helps out your blog, too. But you may be wondering, what social media platforms are the best to use, and why?

Depending on the type of blog you have, and who your target audience is, certain social media platforms will work better for you and your blog. For example, the types of posts that do really well on Pinterest: recipes, beauty/fashion, fitness. The key to making Pinterest work for you is quality pictures. Pinterest is all about imagery, so you want to make sure you have good graphics to pin so it will catch people's eyes!

Another very popular and effective platform to use for your blog is Twitter. Most bloggers have had the most success with Twitter. Hashtags are the perfect way to connect with other people who have similar interests. However, to make the most of what Twitter has to offer, it's important to have tweets scheduled throughout the day. A tweet is easily drowned by other tweets within minutes, so it's important for you to keep a consistent flow of tweets being sent out. You can use programs such as Buffer or Hoot Suite to help you schedule your tweets days in advance. Don't know what to tweet about? Asking questions (that pertain to your blog) is a good way to get conversations going with your followers. You can also tweet quotes or interesting links so people are more likely to retweet you or favorite the tweet, thus getting your Twitter name out there.

Regardless of what kind of blogger you are, if your blog doesn't already have a Facebook page, I highly recommend you go and make one right now! Facebook can drive a lot of traffic to your blog. It's an easy way for people to "like" your posts or share them on their own personal account, which gets the word out to other people. There are also programs that let you set up your blog directly to your Facebook page, so every time you have a new post, it's updated on Facebook. Another great way to keep your readers up to speed!

Then, there's the one that everyone always seems to be really confused by—Google+. You may think it's not much and not important enough to help your blog, but using Google+ is actually one of the best things you can do for your blog! The reason why? Sharing your posts on Google+ adds your link to Google's search engine. So when people search for something on google that relates to your post topic, chances are your blog post will show up!
