12 Hours in Charm City

Hi! Megan, your MD/De rep and blogger at Soup of the Day blog, here!
One of the things I love the most about living in the North East is how close I am to everything! Living in Baltimore I am less than an hour from Washington DC, three hours from NYC, two hours from Philadelphia and two hours from the Eastern Shore. I love that I can make a quick day trip to any of these places and see what they have to offer!
I’m also a believer in word of mouth. I work for Yelp Baltimore and love the idea of people share the good and the bad about the places they visit.  I will always follow a blogger who actively posts about their city so I can learn more about the places I should visit and the things I should do.
Soooo…let’s say you have a Saturday coming up and have no plans. Maybe a day trip to Baltimore should be penciled into your planner.

I love the Inner Harbor and spend quite a bit of time there myself, but so does everyone who visits. You want the inside scoop right? Well I’m going to tell you the best way to spend 12 hours in Baltimore that doesn’t include the harbor. We will start in Canton (a neighborhood outside of the city) and work our way across the harbor and over to Federal Hill (where I live!).
Breakfast in Canton
Breakfast is the best way to jumpstart your day! You will definitely want to check out THB Bagels on Boston Street for some of the best doughy and perfectly seasoned bagels I’ve ever had. The line gets pretty long on the weekend around 9-10am so make sure you stop by around 8am for the freshest bagels and a yummy cup of iced coffee.

Walk in the Park
Patterson Park is one of the biggest parks in Baltimore and can cause one to forget that they are even in the city! I love their paved paths which are good for walking or jogging. They also have a rec center, a pool, and two dog parks if you want to bring your furry friends along!

Lunch in Fells Point
Fells Point is one of the prettiest places in Baltimore, in my opinion. The cobble stone streets really remind you how old this city is. There are plenty of cute little shops, art galleries and antique shops along the water.
Check out Woody’s Rum Bar & Island Grill for lunch. They are hard to find if you don’t know where you are going since they are located above Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream shop. There’s a door on the side of the building that takes you to a staircase that takes you up to Woody’s. Make sure you grab a table by the windows and enjoy the view of the Harbor. Their Jamaican Jerk Marinated Chicken Tacos are almost as good as the view!

Little Italy
As you head towards Federal Hill you will pass through Little Italy. I highly recommend stopping at Vaccaro’s and getting a cookie box to go. Their Nutella cookies and Pizzeles are so buttery and delicious.

Dinner in Federal Hill
The day is starting to wind down so I recommend going straight to Federal Hill. The walk to the top will get you hungry for dinner, but the view at sunset is something everyone has to experience. Federal Hill is my happy place in the city. I like to go to the top and look at the city- reminding myself that there are over half a million other people out there sharing the city that I have fallen in love with.

Once the sun has set I suggest you make your way over to Sobo Café (don’t forget to make a reservation!) for dinner. Everything on their menu is made from scratch and they use only the freshest ingredients. The staff are super friendly and welcoming so make sure you let them know it’s your first time to Charm City! Sobo makes the best chicken pot pie and one of the juiciest burgers I’ve ever tasted, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.

Night Cap
Your visit is winding down and you have to make the trip back home so I think a night cap is in order…a night cap of the dessert variety (helllllo you’re driving home). Pop across the street to Afters Café and get a cup of their Nutella Frozen Yogurt and pile on the toppings.

Baltimore has been known to have a bad reputation but we are called Charm City for a reason. Stop by for a day and we will show you why.

Blog of the Week: Breakfast with Bentley

This week's blog of the week is Breakfast with Bentley!  Breakfast with Bentley is written by Kristine and is about a little bit of everything!  Meet Kristine and Bentley!

Tell us a little about you:
My name is Kristine and I'm a native New Yorker. I am a former high school English teacher and last year, decided to make a huge career move. Now, I work at a law firm in the marketing department and I handle their social media accounts and their events.

Best. Decision. Ever.

I will be married two years this May (time flies!) to my best friend. We have a boxer named Bentley who is the most amazing dog and friend. We love to go out to dinner, binge on Netflix and play Cards Against Humanity with our friends (where wine is definitely involved).

In my spare time, I like to watch reruns of the original Beverly Hills, 90210, sweat at a Hot Yoga class, get together with my girlfriends, take walks around the neighborhood with Bentley, read a good book, and create blog posts. I also started an Etsy Shop last year where I create ornaments out of wedding invitatiosn.

What is your blog about?
My blog is a little bit of everything. I share everything from wedding planning advice, successful recipes, DIY projects, reviews of restaurants, funny childhood stories, inspirational quotes... I insert my sarcasm/humor in the majority of my posts. I'm always trying new things and I like to share my experiences with others.
Bentley sometimes will write a post or two, but he is often found sleeping in the sunshine in the corner of our house.

What is your favorite spot to visit in the Northeast?
The beach! I live on Long Island, so the beach is practically in my backyard! Once the weather gets warmer, I love to take my bike and head for the boardwalk. I also recently fell in love with Montauk. It's such a quaint, beach town and my husband and I love to vacation there in the summer.

What do you love most about blogging?
I love all of the great people I have met along the way. I started blogging in July 2014 with little to no idea what I was doing. I reached out to some great bloggers who have guided me and given me some great advice. I've formed friendships with these ladies and I'm very fortunate.
I also love writing. It's a great creative outlet and I want to share my experiences with the world.

What is your favorite form of social media?
If you asked me two years ago, I probably would've said Facebook. But times have definitely changed and my favorite form of social media would have to be a tie between Twitter and Instagram. I LOVE taking pictures (don't even ask how many I have on my old Flickr account) so Instagram was a natural fit for me.
I love how informative and interactive Twitter can be; I can get involved in a Twitter chat with bloggers from the UK or I can tweet with a celeb, or I can share random thoughts and people from all over respond within minutes... it's pretty wild.

Where do you live and what do you love about it?
I live on Long Island and I love that we are a hop, skip and jump away from New York City, and about two hours from Montauk.
We get the best of both worlds here: the beach and the city life. You just can't beat that!

Thanks Kristine!  Be sure to check out her blog this week and follow her on social media!

Welcome to our Photography Challenge!  This is a once a month challenge to take a photo that fits into the theme for that month.  This months theme is: SWEET.  The link up will remain open the rest of the month so everyone has a chance to show off their photos!

Please make sure to visit other blogs on this hop if you link up and leave a comment on their photo!
Remember to link up directly to the post with your photos fitting the theme!  You can have more than one photo in your post, but please only link up once each month.  Please do not link up to your blogs main page, this link up is for the photography challenge only!

We are both happy and a little sad to announce the Photography Challenge link up will be coming to an end this month.  February's challenge will be the last one, but don't worry we have something else fun up our sleeve!

We are excited to introduce: The Northeast Bloggers Photo Challenge, on instagram!

The instagram challenge will be a monthly challenge on instagram with a different theme each week.  You can share one or more photos for each week's theme.  You can link up your photo for that theme any day that week.  To link up use the hashtag #nebloggersphoto and be sure to tag us (@nebloggersnetwork) in your challenge photos so we can see what everyone came up with!

Good to know:
  • We will post the themes on the blog and on our instagram the week before the new month so you can prepare!
  • If a week overlaps months, there will be two themes for that week!  For example, week 5 of March is also Week 1 of April!
  • For this challenge weeks will run Monday-Sunday
Questions? Let us know in the comments below!  And, if you have any suggestions for future theme weeks just send us an email and we'll try to fit your idea in!

And now on to the February link up.  Do you have a "Sweet" themed photo to share this month?  Link up below!

Blog of the Week: Bekah's Re-Solve

This week's blog of the week is Bekah's Re-Solve!  Bekah recently moved from the suburbs to the city and writes about her journey of green living and all around self improvement on her blog.  Meet Bekah:

Tell us a little about you:
I'm a suburbanite who recently transitioned to city life. In the past year, I started a new career, bought our first house with my husband of 4 years, and we rescued our first dog.

What is your blog about?
Overall, it's the story of my efforts to improve myself and my life. This encompasses many topics, but some of the more dominant ones are vegetarian eating, green living, and faith.

Where do you live and what do you love about it?
I've been in Maryland for 7 years but only moved to Baltimore city a few months ago. I grew up a suburban girl so some changes have been hard (like the struggle to find parking) but others have been fun (like all the local, non-chain businesses to try!).

What is your favorite spot to visit in the Northeast?
There's still so much for me to see! I visited southern Maine in 2011 and it was gorgeous! I also enjoyed Boston.

What do you love most about blogging?
I love how blogging has become its own kind of social network and lifestyle. I had no idea what to expect when I wrote that first post, but two years later I'm amazed at the friendships that have been formed and some perks that have come about all because I share a bit of my life online.

What is your favorite form of social media?
I enjoy connecting with old and new friends on facebook, though with the algorithm changes it's become harder to see people's updates as other types of posts fill up my newsfeed.

Thanks for sharing with us Bekah!  Be sure to head over to her blog this week and follow her on social media!
